restructuring the menu system?

Hi,

do you know how to change the menu structure in debian testing?
I'd like to change the current structure for the whole system at once (not using personal menu files in home). The only thing I want to change is deleting the subdirectory apps so folders like Net, Tools, .. come in the same as Help,Screen, etc. I know how to add items to the menu, how to remove. But I'm wondering if it's possible to change the structure of the folders. So that newly installed applications will be added in the changed menu as well. I haven't found anything in the man files, google, etc.

thx for your attention

The first question, I suppose is: what DE are you using? Gnome? KDE?

Fluxbox. It shouldn't matter which WM or DE I'm using though.

Check out /etc/X11/fluxbox/system.fluxbox-menu to learn how to edit the general menu structure. I haven't tried this myself so I don't know if automatic updating still works after following this advice.

You can move individual menu entries by copying menu files from /usr/lib/menu to /etc/menu and editing them there. For these changes to take effect you need to "su" to root and run the "update-menus" command (and possibly restart fluxbox). I've tried this and it doesn't disturb the automatic menu updating mechanism in any way.

Yea I've done all that Dead Parrot. But thx anyway . Abiword did'nt come with a menu entry and xbase-clients (or somtin like that) put all sorts of garbage in my menu which I don't use anyway so I had to change it. I also changed the system.fluxbox-menu to add a shutdown button, etc. I also wrote it on my webpage so I'd remember how and where to do it.

I guess the only option is to put a menu entry for every program in /etc/menu. And then add a menu file for every new program I install.
Your post makes me think though. Actually it's not at all hard to change *all* those files individually... if only I don't install software anymore so I don't have to bother. I just need to delete Apps/ in every file.

Ahh, I'm doing a lot so that my brother would finally give up windows on this pc and donate the 60GB hd to Debian .

grtz
