Restarting gdm does not work

Hi there,

I just installed a new machine from scratch using the latest stable netinstall-CD. Everything worked fine. The local X looks lousy, but I guess its just the missing driver for the ATI Rage. By the way, anyone know where to get this driver? apt-get couldn't help.

Well, anyway, I want to do XDMCP, since my network is quite safe and snug behind my firewall. Since I am kinda new to gdm, I played around with the options for a while. Whenever I changed something, I naturally wanted to restart gdm to check if it did something. I checked the manpage, and it told me to use gdm-restart. Strange enough, this command does not exist on my machine!

Anyone know how I can resurrect this command? Because searching for gdm with ps -efw and then kill -9 it is quite tiresome and not the Linux way :-)

Thanks for listening...

okay, forget it :-) I just found /etc/init.d/gdm restart

But another question: I would like the gdm to start in the background, so only remote logins will be graphic - I want the local login to be text. Should I change the entry in rc0.d from gdm to gdm&?? Or is there a more elegant solution, as I would not like to manipulate the rc.d's.
