Remove all except base system?

I have had an issue recently with a debian 3.1 installation, basically after being disconnected from a power outlet for three days KDE no longer ran and GNOME worked but was heaving error after error at me. I have two seperate machines this occured on I think I found the cause to be the hardware clock resetting from a weak CMOS battery. Now, however, I am faced with reinstalling Debian, which while not an overly horrible idea, I would prefer to save some time.

I am hoping there is a way to uninstall everything except the base system (what my debian net install cd installs) so that I don't have to go through the cd install process again. Does anyone know if this can be done? I have not found anyhting online to assist me, however, I may be looking for the wrong search terms. I would think apt would have some functionality like this but perhaps I am mistaken. Thanks for any help in advance.

The first thing which comes to my mind is "debfoster"

It's a package which allows you to remove unwanted stuff. But you should know what packages you actually need (it's not so difficult). It can be started interactively.

This is not actually your requirement. I think there are ways to manage this, but I don't know about doing it at this stage of you computer, since it didn't have any list or management of the base syste.

Any way try "debfoster", it will help you. I did for me.
