Removable devices auto-mounted as read-only ( not desirable )

As suggested by timetraveler
I'm re-asking this in this subforum.

Quote:
Currently when I insert a removable device, it is auto-mounted as readonly. To use it I have to do this every time.
Code:
sudo umount /dev/xxx
pmount xxx
This applys to every removable device I have, and did not exist on my previous distro.

Debian amd 64 Squeeze

I'm not sure why "timetraveler" thinks that this is distro specific (it's not).

You could "automate" the above in fstab, but that's usually not how auto-mounting is supposed to work.

Could you tell us what DE (Desktop) or WM + Filemanager you're using?

I'm using the gnome-desktop-environment currently, but this problem exists when X is not running or I'm using a WM such as fluxbox.

Occasionally I get write access to a removable device or an error message in gnome that a device is already mounted when I plug it in. I believe my DE mounts the drive first here before whatever daemon that mounts my devices read-only can. This is entirely random, leaving me to believe my DE and the other daemon are in a loop looking for devices to mount.

I should have looked up the moving of topics before double-posting first. Lesson learned.

Sounds like a bug in gnome-volume-manager, you might check the BTS.

The bug of it sometimes mounting readable appeared when I started using GNOME. AFAIK gnome-volume-manager is doing what it supposed to do, but another daemon is also mounting things ( except as read-only ).
