Release question

Hi All,

I'm new to Debian and have a question about this release zone we're in. Will someone please check my thinking on these:

1. Last stable version is Sarge.

2. Etch is the new testing version.

3. SID isn't the new stable release but rather, stands for "Still In Production."

4. The new stable version (codename?) is not available yet but will be at some undecided/disclosed
date in the near future.

Do I understand this correctly?

Thanks Much,

pb

Some right, some wrong.

1) Sarge is the current stable version, intended for servers and other static boxes. it was due to be retired 12/2006, but has hung around a bit longer.

2) Etch is and has been the testing version as long as Sarge has been stable. When Sarge retires, Etch will slide down to stable.

3) Sid is immune to movement, it is unstable, bleeding edge and always stays there. After things have passed through unstable, they fall into testing, then stable, but unstable never (in name at least) becomes testing.

4) The new stable will be Etch, and the new testing will be codenamed Lenny.

Peace,
JimBass

actually sid doesn't stand for still in development.

sid is a character in Toy Story if i'm not mistaking, just as all other names (Buzz, Woody, Sarge..)

other than that all said is correct.

You're welcome for the help. All of the Debian codenames are characters from Toy Story. Sid was the next door kid that broke toys. The full list/story about that is here.

Code:
5.3.2 Where do these codenames come from?

So far they have been characters taken from the movie "Toy Story" by Pixar.

    *

buzz (Buzz Lightyear) was the spaceman,

    *

      rex was the tyrannosaurus,

    *

bo (Bo Peep) was the girl who took care of the sheep,

    *

      hamm was the piggy bank,

    *

slink (Slinky Dog (R)) was the toy dog,

    *

potato was, of course, Mr. Potato (R),

    *

      woody was the cowboy,

    *

sarge was the sergeant of the Green Plastic Army Men,

    *

etch was the toy blackboard (Etch-a-Sketch (R)),

    *

      lenny was the binoculars.

    *

sid was the boy next door who destroyed toys.
Peace,
JimBass
