recognizing wireless card
 

this is probably a silly question, but here goes: i just bought a dlink dwl-650 wireless pcmcia nic, and i'm trying to get it to work. i compiled the kernel (2.6.0) with support for hermes chipset cards (which should work, as the "help" from make-menuconfig for this option specifically mentioned the dwl-650) and of course, pcmcia support. i know i have to add a line into /etc/network/interfaces to get it to work; problem is, i can't figure out how to get the os to recognize the device. it didn't automagically find the card and name it wlan0 or eth1 (i have an onboard ethernet card), so i'm sort of stuck. i assume that i have to somehow tell the kernel to use its built-in driver for the device and to name it eth1, then add eth1 to my /etc/network/interfaces, but i'm not sure how to go about doing that. any thoughts?

And, which DWL-650 did you get?

the +? M? W? one of 5 other cards... there's kind of a lot of 650's and they all have different chipsets... this information is available manufacturor website...

shit. it's a 650VP1. did i get screwed? this is really an absurd way of marketing these things....

Not only did ya get screwed, they laughed and partyed all the way to the bank with your money :-D... but, yes, unfortunately, everyone who buys a DWL-650 gets screwed cause they have 8 different chipsets and 1 card name...

i kept the receipt, so i'll take it back and exchange it. any suggestions on a wireless card that will definitely work?

No, not really. Seems they all change their chipsets like every 3 weeks to something cheaper and crappier so unless you can get your hands on a really old card that's been tested in linux... its, buy and guess.
