Rebuilding Kernel and Disabled Network Cards

I have a DL140 G1 and I rebuilt the kernel, when I do this and reboot, I have no ability to connect to the box as the network card is disabled. I am using initrd and configured that properly (as I needed to to get the 3Ware raid controller to come up). I enabled the correct module for the network card (Broadcomm NetExtreme), I was unable to compile it into the kerenl and could only load it as a module.

When the system boots, the network cards are disabled, I have had this problem with compiling the kernel twice, I have two identical machines and it always works fine on the 2nd machine, the first machine does this.

Any ideas why this would happen?

Code:
Module Size Used by Not tainted
rtc 7112 0 (autoclean)

What exactly do you mean by "disabled"?
Can you please post output of command /sbin/ifconfig and file /etc/network/interfaces
