Radeon X800 trouble...and motherboard burn-out....Etch's fault?
I've spent the past week attempting to get some version of Debian working on my AMD Athlon 64 3200+ / Biostar TForce4 SLI system...first I dled the ENTIRE Sarge distro (all 15 CDs) due to parental restrictions for internet usage on MY comp...and installed it, but for the life of me, could not get any sort of GUI to work with my Sapphire Radeon X800GTO...I then found out (the hard way) that ati's drivers required xorg....so I went out and dled almost all of Etch (Iso # 15's almost done) and installed it. I worked, I fiddled, and FINALLY I got a simple, what looked like x-windows-system to finally show up. I was ectstatic.
so here's the first of two questions. First: I punched in the "halt" command within the terminal on the x-windows...shutdown proceded normally, and then, when it finally got to the last line, (i forget the wording) but linux's version of "you may now power down", the whole system...shut off. now, every time I"VE used "halt" I've had to manually turn off my system. after turning it on again (or TRYING to) I saw a spark...it seems the on-board power switch shorted...but at any rate, I now can't switch on my system, and I'm sending the mobo in for replacement. so my question is: is it possible that Etch inadvertently caused the short (if not, it was an AMAZING coincidence), and if so, should I high-tail it to bug report and make it known?
I guess my second question is...once I get the replacement, is it likely that having my X800 on an nVidia board (I know, I know....I wish I'd done more research) will cause problems?
naturally, I care more about the answer to the first than the second (the second being vague and...well, I'll know in two weeks, won't I?).
