Question about upgrade package

I've get the deb-source of a package in order to recompile it with custom build options.
After that, I've installed it with dpkg -i custom-package.deb.

Now, when I type:

apt-get upgdade

the "custom-package" seems to be old and apt ask me if I want to upgrade it.

But the version of deb-source is the same of the official package!
Why this behavior?
