Quake 2 sound issues
Hello everyone,
I've installed quake and quake2-data packages, and installed data files from the official quake2 cd. Quake2 now runs like a charm in fullscreen openGL, but the sound is terrible. It's choppy and laggy. I tried playing with different sndspeed options, I tried changing sound drivers from oss (default that gives choppy and laggy sound) to alsa (doesn't give any sound) to arts (no sound) to sdl (gives weird sound and eventually stops all sounds and freezes the game). I've searched far and wide, and could not find a solution to this.
Does anybody have a clue how might I fix the sound problem. If somebody has quake2 running fine, can you post your .quake2/baseq2/config file please.

After more sniffing around I tried
echo "quake2 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss
which is supposed to bypass the alsa PCM plugin layer, but it has no effect. I also tried different options such as:
"quake2 0 16 direct" with sndbits set to 16 in quake config file, I played with different sndspeed (sampling rate) options, but the problem persists. Sound is fine, but its choppy. It works for a second, then does not work for a bout to seconds, and so forth.
Does anybody have any ideas about this? Alternatively can somebody who has quake 2 working correctly post their config file so I can take a look?
