What's your graphics card, graphic driver, WM/DE? What does the pointer section of /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4) say?

Try using a different mouse, also try updating the BIOS, these things may help.

The section's actually called "InputDevice" (sorry) and looks like the section below.
Code:
Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "USB Mouse"
        Driver "mouse"
        Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
        Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
        Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
        Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
        Option "Buttons" "5"
EndSection

Which mouse do you have? USB or PS/2? Comment out the non-relevant section and make sure that the uncommented section has the "corepointer" option. If you've got a 3 button mouse you can get rid of "emulate3buttons" and if you've got a wheel then make sure you're using the IMPS/2 protocol (not PS/2).

If you've not got a wheel then you can get rid of the "Zaxismapping" line. Other than that I can't think of anything you can do except search google for the exact make and model of the mouse and it's compaibility with xfree86. See if anyone else is having the same problem as you are.
