Problems with starting OpenGL apps

Hi,

I have a small problem. I installed nvidia drivers because of some games I want to try But when I'm starting the game, system kicks me out to login screen... Simply log me off...

Linux version 2.6.18-4-k7 (Debian 2.6.18.dfsg.1-12etch2) (dannf@debian.org) (gcc version 4.1.2 20061115 (prerelease) (Debian 4.1.1-21)) #1 SMP Wed May 9 23:42:01 UTC 2007
KDE: 3.5.7
CPU: Athlon XP 2000+
Graphic: nVidia GeForce FX 5700
RAM : 1GB

Maybe I have something wrong configured or missing... Any suggestions in this problem?

Log you off probably means the Xserver has crashed.
Could be your video driver. Check in this subforum, a lot of people have posted the "debian way of doing it".
I don't have an nvidia nor ati, I can't tell you if your card is supported.

I've made some progress. Completely kicked out all nvidia packages and then
Code:
dpkg -i nvidia-kernel-source_1.0.9755-1_i386.deb
m-a
UPDATE
PREPARE
SELECT (nvidia-kernel)
GET
BUILD
Install? YES
modprobe nvidia
echo nvidia >> /etc/modules
nvidia-xconfig
dpkg -i nvidia-glx_1.0.9755-1_i386.deb
That's it... Now Xorg works without crashes but another problem is in sight... When I run KInfoCenter and click on OpenGL, app says "Can't initialize OpenGL" (eh, it's translated from my language so in English it may be little different). So I think I've missed something in configs...

Any suggestions what's wrong (where?)?

Solved

Ok, problem solved. I think my system was in horrible situation but now... If anyone will have similar problem, here's my solution...

1) first of all I made fresh install of Debian (etch 2.6.18-4)
2) upgrade from stable to testing
3) install necessary headers (2.6.18-4-486)
4) download nvidia-kernel-source_1.0.9755-1_i386.deb
5) download nvidia-glx_1.0.9755-1_i386
6) start xterm, su - for root
7) stop KDM (GDM)
Code:
/etc/init.d/kdm stop
8) log in as root
9) install nvidia-kernel common files
Code:
apt-get install nvidia-kernel-common
10) go to folder where you downloaded .deb packages
Code:
dpkg -i nvidia-kernel-source_1.0.9755-1_i386.deb
11) start module-assistant (if you don't have installed, just apt-get install module-assistant)
Code:
m-a
12) press UPDATE
13) press PREPARE
14) press SELECT and select nvidia-kernel
15) press GET
16) press BUILD
17) when asked about installation, answer Yes
18) when installed, just go back to shell (press Esc key few times)
19) add nvidia module to kernel
Code:
modprobe nvidia
20) set module to load on boot
Code:
echo nvidia >> /etc/modules
21) set-up xorg.conf (if nvidia-xconfig is missing, just apt-get install nvidia-xconfig)
Code:
nvidia-xconfig
22) go to folder where you downloaded .deb packages (if you changed it)
Code:
dpkg -i nvidia-glx_1.0.9755-1_i386.deb
23) done!

Now you can simply run KDM (GDM) or reboot system. nVidia logo will be shown before login screen loads. I hope you'll have no problems with this tutorial and it will help someone...
