Question problems with KDE desktop and konqueror

Hi there,

I am new to LQ, in fact I am nicely shocked after visiting it first time today... kudos to all of you who make this such a great resource for help!

my problem is that after updating my debian testing via synaptic some time ago, KDE began acting wierd in at least two aspects:

- my desktop settings (mainly wallpaper) are not accepted, and the wallpaper present when the login screen remains there --desktop icons are not present, and right button menu does not show up--

- konqueror fails to load detailed/list/icon view (errors about unresolved symbols appear, but I am typing this from a windows machine and cannot recall), and only FSView view is possible

yesterday I updated my system again (my kde version is 3.3.2 now) but nothing changed

any idea?

thanks

Hi,
I could not be of much help except in this : did you install apt-listbugs on your system ?
This utility helps you in upgrading your system by showing a list of the bugs currently
found and -hopefully- corrected. There were grave bugs in kde libs as far as I remember.
No wonder you had problems because there were probable conflicts between older/newer versions.
I run a mixed etch/sid system and take notice of the warnings. Until now, for the best.

Oh, and I personally don't think synaptic nor aptitude to be the easiest utilities to maintain
your system, I am more inclined to use KPackage, which is perhaps a bit looked down upon
but works great. As long as you take notes of which packages you install/get rid of.
If you can't find better answers for your kde problem, you might consider a fresh install and
the install of apt-listbugs, FIRST thing, even before guarddog and others...

Hope that helps

alright, I'll type "apt-listbugs apt" tomorrow and wait results (crossing fingers)

btw, the files with unresolved symbols are those "/usr/lib/kde3/konq_iconview.so", "konq_listview.so" and so on... provided by the package "konqueror" (version 3.3.2)

well I have investigated and found no solution:

- I installed apt-listbugs and yes, now it checks for bugs before installing any new package
- no errors are found, though
- the "undefined symbol" errors appear in libraries included in package konqueror

then it seems I could do one of these things... please advise me:
- I could downgrade konqueror and the rest of kde to 3.2.2 (the oldest one in ftp.kde.org), or
- I could upgrade konqueror and the rest of kde to 3.4.2, or
- I could just wait until my problem is fixed by a new update

the 1st option will be a pain because of the number of possible conflicts appearing
the 2st option would leave me without a lot of kde apps that I use but have not been ported to 3.4.2
the 3rd option... do you think it will really ever happen?

thanks samael for your answer!! and yes, I used KPackage in the good old days too...
