Does this error occur when you have logged in as user, then in console you su to root, and try to run a graphical application?

If so, as user, give this command: xhost +localhost

Then su to root, and start the graphical application.

Much easier way: install sux.
Then you only have to give in the console the command
"sux ..." (see man sux and man su for the ...) and off you go.
