problem with resolutions and login screen

I'm running into a problem with my screen resolution. I am running Debian and KDE, and I have a graphical user login. I'm not sure which one is it but it has a flower (I think it's gdm). I changed my XF86Config-4 file so I could change my resloution to 1024x768, but that did not work so I ran the dpckg-reconfigure whatever to change my settings. They changed for KDE, but now when I login or logout, the login screen is too big for the screen and I can't shut down. How do I change the resolution for the login screen so I can shut the system down? the desktop looks great, but the login screen is too big.

thx!

--solved--

OK I solved the problem, and I only made one change. In my XF86Config file I just put "1024x768" at the end of the line after "800x600" and "640x480" instead of at the beginning of the line. I put 1024x768 at the beginning and it booted normally. I may have somehow changed something else in the process, but changing the resolution order solved the problem of a huge login screen.
