This means that the Makefile in the current directory does not have a section "menuconfig"

Check that you are at the root of your kernel source tree and that you see the configure script and a Makefile.

make sure you cd to your /usr/src/root-folder-of-your-kernel's-source-tree.
type ls to see if there is configure and Makefile.

i think there is configure file in /boot , so if /usr/src/root-source-folder doesnt have configure file should i copy it there from /boot

Just to make sure.

Are you trying to compile the kernel?

If you are trying to compile the kernel do you have the source code?

If you have the source code where did you pu it?

So don't copy files around. Unzip the kernel source tarball in /usr/src. It will create a new directory change to that directory and follow your kernel compilation manual. If you don't have a manual, you need one. Check the LDP: en.tldp.org

By the way: Never, never ever use root to compile anything (or make config either) or when you do not absolutely need it! It's the beginning of the end! Worse, it's the apocalypse!
But seriously, don't do it. Really. Copy the complete source tree to your home directory, configure it, compile it, and do not change to root before make install or make modules_install. (Of course this rule applies to any software package as well.)

By the way by the way: Does the Linux source support something like VPATH building? If yes, you wouldn't even have to copy the sources anymore.
