Problem with Gmail standard view in iceweasel
Hi guys,
I am using Etch and updating regularly.
I cannot use gmail in standard view. I searched the net and found that others also had this problem, but with the Gresemonkey add-on. I have this problem without add-on. I didn't find any solution on the net yet.
When I access gmail with ?nobrwosercheck appended to url, I see the standard view but without the web-based chat.
What could be wrong?
Ps: I can see the standard view on WindowsXp with firefox/ie at home and also on slackware with firefox at work.
regards,
Hardik

Strange. I have gmail open nearly constantly in iceweasel, and it isn't a problem. What actually doesn't work - does it not display at all, does it appear too large/small?
I do like that Debian is holding the firefox guys to the fire over the "open-ness" of firefox, but I also have to say that Iceweasel is being a real pain in many regards. First there was the problem where some people's home page was altered to be the mozilla-firefox welcome, then this, and I also get the completely random crash much more often, usually on sites with heavy flash use. I suppose at this point it is too late to get the firefox team and Debian guys to make nice, but it would be a good thing if it would happen.
Do you have the latest Iceweasel (2.0.0.3), and do you have any other browsers, like Mozilla, Konqueror, or Ephiany?
Peace,
JimBass

No, gmail has two versions
1. basic html which is plain html where you don't have the gizmos e.g. web-chat even you cannot change settings
2. Standard view which comes with all the gizmos.
By gizmos I mean the javascript (AJAX) based stuff which separates gmail from the crowd.
I always see the basic html view and cannot see the standard view, which I could before some days.

Sorry, I use the standard view without a problem in iceweasel. I just tried using konqueror, and it loads everything except the chat/contacts/IM section along the left side.
Peace,
JimBass

I can also get the standardview in iceweasel with ?nowbrowswercheck appended to the url. But I want the chat to work when I log in for email.
Any idea what could be wrong ?
I agree with you that the dispute with the mozilla guys has created problems for the simple users like you and me who don't care about politics and want to just use debian.
regads,
Hardik

I've never had a problem with Iceweasel and Gmail. My only thought would be to see if JavaScript is enabled in Iceweasel.

To the best of my knowledge, you don't actually need a JRE installed for JavaScript to work.

This is 100% correct. JRE is needed for Java. Java is not the same thing as JavaScript. They are completely different in every way imaginable.
As for the original Q, I do not use gmail so I dont know what to tell you.

Hi guys,
Of course I have JavaScript enabled in the browser.
In fact the standard view was working with Iceweasel until I make apt-get dist-upgrade someday and a new version of iceweasel installed. I think I have 2.0.0.3 version, I am not sure though and post the correct version number when I am back home.
thanks and regards,
Hardik
