Unhappy Problem with audacity on debian/kanotix

I just moved over from fedora -3 to kanotix. Audacity is installed, but won't export my file as an mp3. It's compiled with mp3 support, but asks for the file, "". On fc-3, I would install lame and that file would be installed in my usr/lib. However, the debian repos don't show "lame". I did a lot of searching, but didn't find this addressed. Does anyone know how I can get Audacity to export files as mp3?

lame is in the debian-unofficial repository (just modify your sources.list and you will see it).
