It looks like X is too old to be detecting the the chipset on your motherboard but we would have to see the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 you are using file too be sure. You would need to go to either www.backports.org or www.apt-get.org and find a line to put into your /etc/apt/sources.list for a newer X built for Woody preferablely a 4.3 version the newest out there for Debian.

Code:
Module class: XFree86 XInput Driver
ABI class: XFree86 XInput driver, version 0.2
 (II) I810: Driver for Intel i810 chipset: i810, i810-dc100, i810e, i815 <---- i845 not in list.
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 00:02:0
(--) Assigning device section with no busID to primary device
 (EE) No devices detected.

As root:

#apt-get install discover mdetect read-edid x-window-system icewm icewm-themes

#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

answer the questions or let system auto detect them.

reboot

That looks reasonable except I would find out the real refresh rates for your monitor and put them in there these look a little on the low side.

Code:
Section "Monitor"
 Identifier "Generic Monitor"
 HorizSync 30-57
 VertRefresh 43-72
 Option "DPMS"
 EndSection
Hmm I suppose you could always try once you have found an archive for the newer X download everything in there that you see with xfonts and the xserver-xfree86 and xserver-common basically everything you see that looks like it is X server related then mount the partition on Redhat you downloaded too and use dpkg -i whole_bunch_of_packages_here_until_it_will_install_without_complaint in the directory. I think it would be best though to setup your connection with Debian though. What are the problems you are having, what is the hardware involved?

hardware involved w/ internet

well as i mentioned earlier it is a dell 2400 dimension.I have a dial-up connection
the modem involved is a conexant pci modem(software modem)
i managed to find drivers for it at www.linuxant.com in either rpm or tar form
it took the better part of a day to get it to wotk on redhat and i have not yet figured out
how to make it all work w/debian. my experience here is minimal which is why
i said i needed a step by step how to , I know its a pain but i appreciate the help
i have heard alot of good things about debian and would like to make it work.
