Problem setting up a repo

I've been posting beryl debs on sidux forums and I'm now trying to create a repo but I'm hitting a wall.
I've made the debs, uploaded them with the Packages.gz file and added the url to my sources.list.
When I do apt-get update it goes without errors on the repo but when I open synaptic and search for the files it just shows the names and a download size of 1 byte, no other information and nothing in the descriptions or anything but if I click on the
"Versions" tab at the bottom it shows the correct version number.
Now, if I install some debs I made earlier with different version numbers using dpkg -i they show up in synaptic (the ones I dpkg'd, not the repo ones) and if I go to Package > Force Version, I can select the version on the repo and it downloads and installs it fine.
What am I doing wrong?

<EDIT>
I forgot to mention, one or 2 of the packages DO show in synaptic but I can't install them because it says the others are not installable

Yes I did and read several different guides to get it set up.
After a couple of days messing around with it I have now solved the problem. I've had problems with a package called splashy so while I've got a version that's working I decided to pin it and when I opened /etc/apt/preferences I noticed loads of beryl entries. I don't remember why I did it and I don't remember doing it but I removed those and the repo works fine now.
