Hi Folks. I've upgraded my Debian 3.0r2 to the testing version from the testing repository. I've got kernel 2.4.27-2-386 with Alsa 1.08. The sounds are working ok, but I've got a problem with the usb midi keyboard. I've gone through all of this on FC1 & FC2 in modules.conf & modprobe.conf, but Debian being a bit different using /etc/modutils has presented a few problems. I put snd-usb-audio in /etc/modules but on re-booting it set the usb midi keyboard as card 0 , seeing it as a possible sound card. The audigy2 soundblaster card not being loaded at all "snd-emu10k1". Leaving the keyboard switched off, the audigy soundcard is loaded as card 0, and the usb midi keyboard is showing as card 1 after switching on the keyboard after bootup and verified in cat /proc/asound/cards. I've tried setting an alias for snd-usb-audio as card1 with options index=1 in /etc/modutils but it won't have it. If I leave the usb midi keyboard switched on when booting up it still insists on detecting it as a sound card and setting it as card0. I have this problem on MDK10 but thats with Alsa 1.06 and apparently there is a known bug stopping the sequencer module being loaded. I have no problems with Alsa 1.08 in FC1 & FC2 with my Evolution usb midi keyboard and feel there should be some solution to this on my Debian system. Anybodies welcome to come in on this one. Nigel. aka farpoint.
Incidentally, I'm trying to get Demudi to see if the results are any better, but on dial-up I've only got 547 of 646MB over the last couple of days, and with the resumes only hope the iso will be intact.

Try creating a file /etc/modutils/sound_cards with these contents.
Code:
## Created by me for proper loading of sound cards
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-1 snd-usb-audio
options snd-emu10k1 index=0
options snd-usb-audio index=1
Then run update-modules to have the information entered into the modules.conf correctly. This is just a guess as to the correct settings so give it a try and see if it works, the options lines may not even be needed.
Hi Stephen. Cracked it man. Update-modules is a really good one to write down in pen and ink. I already had those entries in modutils but running update-modules has fixed it 100%. I'm gonna try that in MDK10.0 with reservations as someone on the Alsa user list said there was a bug in Alsa 1.06. You never know! Many thanks and may the source continue with you.
