Printing to HP printer connected to windows box.

I would like to print from my debian lenny computer to a winxp computer with a HP laserjet 1320 printer connected.

My computer IP: 192.168.1.204
WinXP computer with printer IP: 192.168.1.206
Printer name: hpLaserJ

I will really appreciate if you could help me with this subject. Up to now, what I tried didn't work.

Thanks!

It would be nice if told what you already tried. That way it is easier to help you.

Basically, you first need to know if the printer is supported by linux.
http://www.openprinting.org:80/show_...-LaserJet_1320 says it is.

Then you enable printer sharing in windows.

Then you open a browser on linux, and go to the address http://localhost:631

What you fill in by name, is how the printer will be called on linux. It doesn't have to be the name you gave in on windows.
Location and description are extra info. You can fill in what you want.

Device is "Windows Printer via SAMBA".

If the printer is shared under windows with the name "hpLaserJ", the URI is in your case "smb://192.168.1.206/hpLaserJ"
Important: You have to use the name you gave to the printer when you enabled printer sharing under windows.
Note: if you have to give a password to use the printer, the URI is: "smb://usernameassword@192.168.1.206/hpLaserJ"

The make is HP, the model 1320. Openprinting (see link above) recommends the hpijs driver.

When you click add printer, you have to give the root username and password.

Now you should be able to print on the windows printer.

If it complains about not finding a smb.conf file, do a basic samba configuration on the linux computer.

Thanks for your help. When I access to cups (localhost:631) it doesn't give me the possibility to choose "windows printer via SAMBA". Any other I've tried, didn't work (HP printer, Internet printing protocol, Hal printing backend, etc).

Printer in windows is shared as hpLaserJ.

I've also installed samba. Maybe my /etc/samba/smb.conf is not the one needed. I don't know. Let me show it to you:

Quote:
[global]
workgroup = ws
server string = DEBIAN
security = share
log file = /var/log/samba.%m
max log size = 50
printcap name = cups
show add printer wizard = no
disable spoolss = yes
wins support = yes

[COMPARTIDA]
path = /home/debian/Compartida
guest ok = yes
read only = no
What should I do to be able to configure the printer via Samba and Cups?

Thanks again for all your help,

Maybe this URL can help: http://excess.org/docs/linux_windows_printing.html

Look especially under "Required packages" and "Printing To Windows PCs"

Instead of using the lpadmin and other commands, look if the "Windows Printer via SAMBA" option becomes available.
