Printers don't work after CUPSYS upgrade

I am using Debian Unstable on 2 PCs. After upgrading CUPS from 1.2.1 to 1.2.2-1on one of them both my printers would not print.

Printers are an old Canon BJC4100 on a parallel port and an HP3920 on a USB port. They work OK on the other PC with the older CUPS version.

I purged CUPS, FooMatic and everything else I could and reinstalled but to no avail. I get "Printer not connected" messages, despite the fact that CUPS detects my printer.

My problem is identical to the one described in bug #383091.

I would like to revert to the older CUPS version 1.2.1 but cannot find it to download. Is there a way I can get it off the other PC? Alternatively does anyone know where I can find the .deb file?

Thanks.

Thanks for the tip but I had already tried that and it didn't work for me.

A small number of people seem to have this problem which is why I would like to revert to the previous version of CUPS. - If I can find a sourec for the files.

http://www.cups.org/software.php

here you can find the sources for CUPS 1.2.1 . I can't help you compiling them, anyway.. I still have to learn. Anyway, I think you could compile it in a deb and install it, like I did with the kernel package.

Good luck!

Given the complexity of CUPS and the fact that Debian packages often place files in different directories I would very much prefer to get hold of a .deb file.

It is not a good idea to compile packages from source if they are offered as .deb packages, especially if they are a central part of the system like CUPS is.

Thanks however. I'm hoping that somebody will come up with a link to the deb Package for 1.2.1

well, the Debian stable package list I read:

Code:
cupsys (1.1.23-10sarge1) [security] Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - server
which is - I think - as close as we can get. Testing is alredy at 1.2.2:

Code:
cupsys (1.2.2-1) Common UNIX Printing System(tm) - server
.

So I suggest you to download the oldest package, which should be better than nothing.

You can find it here: http://packages.debian.org/stable/net/cupsys

I've worked around this by putting the printers on the other PC and sharing them from there.

Interestingly when I tried to use "Remote CUPS Server" I got the same behaviour but when I set the remote printer up via SAMBA it worked a treat.

So I'll hold back from upgrading the 1.2.1 copy until 1.2.3 comes out.

Thanks for the interest.
