Heres my issues...
The whole process of configuring a printer is insanely complicated. Editing files, Installing or checking for installation of CUPS, localhost:631, LPR, BSD. I don't even know if I need a special driver for it. And I don't know what cups is. This stuff is all written as if I have some previous knowledge. I can't find anything written for morons.
I have to say, in Winblows you installed a driver and printed. No fuss no muss. Even Mandrake, took me 5 minutes to get this printer working.
I made a little progress using
http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/linux...apter/ch14.pdf
In the 'Finding drivers' section I checked the hardware compatability list and found my printer NOT listed. It did list hp 3920 and 3940 but not 3930.
Next I wnet to 'Installing a printer on a standalone linux pc'.
I ran lpstat-t after someone told me I needed to install lprng.
The result was something to the effect that the printer was working or installed(sorry, I'm at work, not at my linux pc).
I next went to
http://localhost:631 and configured accoringly. But when I did a test page I hit print and the data loaded into memory and the next step that would be the actual printing did not occur.
So, thats as far as I can go and I have no way of figuring out if I need a driver, if my printer won't work, where cups comes into play, etc.
I searched synaptic for cups and got a big list of cups related stuff. I found what, from the discription, must be the cups package and installed it.
I know from my letter I sound helpless but thats only because I am :-)
Can you get me going?
