Print from Debian to Win XP through samba
Hello,
I am new to debian and I need some help to configure my printer.
Problem:
The printer is connected to a Windows XP machine, and it is shared. Works well in Windows and on other Linux machines (Redhat, Fedora, Mdk) through samba.
On my debian box, samba works ok, but the printer doesn't print.
What I tried:
For configuring the printer on the linux clients I have always used the nice utilities those distros have, whereas I found none for debian (Printtool looks old and doesn t contain my driver). So I tried to use webmin with no luck. And CUPS.
I go to localhost:631, do all the settings, print a test page:
the response is:
Unable to connect to SAMBA host, will retry in 60 seconds...foomatic-rip version $Revision: 3.43.2.5 $ running...
which of course I expect, since I had no place where to put USERNAME and PASSWORD..
What I also tried is this little test:
smbclient //nameofmymachine/nameofmyshare -U myuser%mypass -d 3 -c "put /mylocalpath/myfile"
as a result I get the nice lady from windows saying:
"Printing started"
"Printing ended"
...and a blank page comes out...
I tried to look at the Docs in Cups, which are horrid for a regular user...
Does someone have a hint, or a way to debug the problem?
thanks
p.s. I just tried this silly thing: I got all the files from the /etc/cups directory of a linux machine which was configured to use this printer and I overwrote the local files.
As a result: now also from the cups page I can send a test to the printer.. the lady speaks, but I get a blank page as well...
