Power Failure - Settings lost

Early this morning out power shutoff for about 30seconds. My debian (sarge) was running at the time and now when I boot into the "family" account, all my icons on the desktop are gone. I have just a blank desktop. Ussually I wouldn't care and just set them again but I can't right click to create new launchers. I logged in to my account to see if I lost everything. I lost nothing, but I can not log off. The option is there, I click "log off" but nothing happens. On the family account I can log off. Any help on how to fix this?

what windowmanager do you use? the poweroff might have trashed some session settings and X startup seems to fail in loading (parts of) your last session. likely the application managing your root window (nautilus & friends) isn't started or failed to load. to set it up new remove the dot.files from your wm in your ~/ - your previous settings will be lost. or try to spot the problem by looking at .xsession-errors and/or trying to start that application in a xterm and analyse the output.
