Postfix SMTP configuration problem, incorrect login

I'm setting up a postfix mailserver and I have both POP3 and IMAP working but for some reason SMTP will not accept my login. I'm using Debian Testing on a amd64 server.

The user is a local user on the server, and like I said it will accept incoming mail, I can check mail, I just can't login to send mail.

My ultimate goal would be to have multiple users stored in a MySQL database so I don't have to make each one a local user. I've tried reading how-tos but at this point I'm still not seeing what I am missing.

Thanks.

What IMAP server are you using?
Dovecot can provide an auth mechanism for postfix, so you can kill 2 birds with one stone.

Check the excellent docs at postfix.org and dovecot.org
There are examples covering pretty much all configurations.
