pkg manager wants my lost and gone cd disk
 

Hi.

Where is equivalent to my Etch 4.0 dvd

IOW, same pkgs on internet as the packages on my disappeared dvd

Slackware I can just go to a mirror on the internet (it's ok to loose my install DVD). Not so in Debian (I'm yet to find package mirror/trees etc. I looked).

(just the security updates) Keeps prompting me to insert my missing dvd.

I DO NOT want to try and find the dvd.

Assuming you're using Synaptic, simply open synaptic, go to repositories (it's under a pull-down menu - I don't recall which as I don't have admin privs on the machine I'm working on right now), then uncheck the "CD" option - probably at the bottom of the window. Once you do that, be sure to click the "Reload" button on the main synaptic window, then you'll no longer need the CD.

If you're using apt-get or aptitude, edit /etc/apt/sources.list & either remove or comment out the line that references the CD/DVD, then update the repository. With aptitude, use the 'U' key, I forget how to do it with apt-get, but the man pages should help you. ;)

Synaptics (the orange colored "updates are available" notifier).

(I see that through the package manager I can browse).

(just out of curiosity) Outside the package manager, Is there any way to browse for packages directly on the internet?

(Slackware can do so with a web browser) (but deb mirrors are different -- in them, using a firefox/iceweasel web browser, I could not find the packages).

I think you might be referring to packages.debian.org.
