Pan 0.12-1 on Lenny (fully Updated).
Have had no problem using Pan untill last week.
Pan loads ok and downloads the subscibed headers, but when i try
to open a message Pan closes down.
I have checked the bug reports and other info areas but
to no avail.
Any help from you guys would be very gratefull.
I have loaded up Knode which works ok but i prefer Pan.
Too long in the tooth to change
Tks guys in advance for any help.
Did you try to install a newer version? I see you use 0.12-1 and 0.14.2 is available too.
A quick search tells me that there is a debian packet available, be it that it is for Sarge (I'm not a debian user myself, don't know if that is at all possible if you use Lenny atm).
Do you have any info about why it crashes? You could try starting it from a terminal and see if it generates any output.
One other thing: Even though I use Pan also, it is not one of the better programs ever made. It does crash every so often and loves to grab available resources. The problem is, that Pan is the only decent binary newsreader out there compared to the others (just my 2c).
I think Pan may have a problem if you have a very (,very) large number of messages in it's database; including read messages. You might try a test and rename the ~/.pan2 directory and start over, at least temporarily.
Tks guys for the input info.
I will try the trace but i think one of Pans dependent packages
is the problem, as i am fully up to date on three lenny machines
and it only happened after last weeks updates. If i come up with
anything i will add it to this thread, otherwise i will continue
using knode untill lenny kicks back in with an update
to one of the problem dependencies.
Tks again for the input from you guys, back to work i go.
Found bug report #441075 at http://packages.qa.debian.org.
This states the segmentation problem is known and resolved
with the latest pan (in unstable ).I will wait for it
to migrate into Testing (lenny)
Hope this helps any one else.
Tks for the previous help guys ,keep at it.
