Package Upgrade Process?

I use Debian Linux for all my production servers at work & I'm wondering what the process or time frame is to get a package like PostgreSQL to be updated from 8.4 to 9.1 in Squeeze (stable)? Is 8.4 frozen in Squeeze definitely or will it eventually be upgraded once developers test it and it meets their quality expectations?

9.1 offers so many synchronization feature upgrades over 8.4 and would make my life so much easier as a DBA. I see Wheezy has PostgreSQL 9.x but sadly I can't run this release of Debian on my production server.

Thanks for any information...

9.1 is in squeeze backports, add the backport repo and follow the directions.

Stable only gets new versions to fix security bugs.
