Smile Package feedback and DVD player

Dear Guys - Just making an observation about packages in Debian. I have used Deb for a few years now and it's great I like it, and support from these forums has helped me a lot to understand more about Linux.

One thing I find difficult is the way synaptic package manager provides information about packages. I have a problem at the moment which illustrates this difficulty. DVDs don't seem to play on my system, (Deb 4.0) so I would like to go to the package manager to get a package which plays DVDs; problem is the packages are so numerous (good I agree), but browsing them is unstructured and when I do it, it's of the form of click a package name and read the info, then click the next one etc. can take ages and of course the package names themselves don't often give any clue.

So here's my vote for a better package information system for Debian. Who should I tell?

Does anyone know of a package which I can use to play DVDs - I tried mplayer but I get lots of errors and it refuses to play the DVD. Music CDs work fine now I have permissions on the drive.

Many thanks,

I use xine (libxine1) and totem (a gui frontend for xine) to play DVD's.

Another one to look at is vlc.

As for synaptic being hard to use, I have not found that to be the case. I find what I'm looking for quickly with the 'search' button at the top. Use good search criteria and it works well.

VLC is good and will play almost everything. mplayer will play almost anything that you throw at it *if* you have the right codecs installed. But that goes for any other media player. To play dvds you will need the dvdcss and readdvd libraries installed. Not sure about how vlc stands with codecs and libraries - I think it comes with them.
