Question on Woody: ALSA-VIA686 southbridge

Anyone here ever get the VIA686 southbridge ALSA driver to compile as given by Woody? I always get
Code:
checking for which soundcards to compile for... Unknown soundcard via686a, exiting!
...
Module /usr/src/modules/alsa-driver failed.
Poking around for holes, I have found in /usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/:
pci/via686.c
alsa-kernel/pci/via686.c

... so, I dunno if ALSA for Woody is incomplete or whatever.

Bonus question!!:
Anyone know how to compile the 2.4 kernel (2.4.18 to be exact) to get sound to work for an AC97? I know it works somehow, I did it before, but I forgot to save the config file

just for informational measure, my lspci:
Code:
00.07.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super South] (rev 1b)
...
00.07.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. AC97 Audio Controller (rev 21)
THANKS FOR THE HELP

Hi,

I'm going to try to answer your bonus question..

You have to configure your kernel using make menuconfig, go to sound and choose AC97 support... Easiest way to enable your sound card support is when there is a "*" in front of you soundcard.

Hope it helps!

ah, damn, I should have been more specific about the kernel.

The kernel has always had the AC97 codec and MIDI compiled in.

I've also tried adding on top of that:
Creative SBLive! (EMU10K1)
Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI (ES1371)
OSS sound modules
100% Sound Blaster compatibles (SB16/32/64, ESS, Jazz16) support

Still, I keep getting the error that says the device /dev/dsp doesn't exist. I do have permissions to the group audio.

Thanks for reading this far.
