NVIDIA + Debian Sid + KDE 3.5 + GLX + Beryl = RUNS GREAT !

Finally I have achieved to install GLX with a composite manager (I could never run compiz), Compiz always gave me problems, this may be because of some dependencies of compiz with Gnome, so the solutions for the KDErs like me, is Beryl, wich doesn't have these dependencies.

Here is the full documentation for the installation beryl-project for Debian, I bet this will also work for Etch since this also have Xorg 7.1.

Any doubts about the installations please don't doubt to post. Good luck, and have a nice desktop

I installed the same setup on my P4 2.8Ghz. Even with a 64mb AGP graphics card it runs Beryl sweet as

I was looking at this, and everything seemed to work just fine, except I couldn't get the X server to install after everything was all said and done. Is fglrx required for ATI devices? Or can I use the xserver-xorg-ati drivers instead? I've got those doing dri, so I assumed they'd work. Seemingly not.... Suggestions?

EDIT: No, as long as your card is older than the x200, you can use opensource drivers. You just need to add

Option "Composite" "1"
instead of what it said in the tutorial. If you card uses open source drivers you don't need to install xgl either, you can us AIGLX, which is built into x.org 7.1.

If anyone needs help, #beryl on freenode is a good place.

All the ATI X1k series card as myself user of x1600 have no luck with aiglx at the moment so we can only use xgl or nothing for now since the radeon driver doesnt support our cards yet.
some x800 users have aiglx working good but not the X1k series

Help please! I followed the tutorial.. X runs, but when I try to beryl-manager, all I get is windows without title bar and everything freezes. Then I have to restart X. I have an nVidia card, with driver installed and driver module compiled by m-a, under etch.

Running beryl --version returns:

beryl-core 0.1.3

but it doesn't say xgl is present. Is this the problem? :|

For first, you don't need XGL since xorg for Debian brings support on AIGLX wich is a nice substitute. So XGL is not required anymore

Ok, now I see you have a mess with the NVidia drivers, you should unistall the modules and ONLY INSTALL THE BETA OFFICIAL DRIVERS...

And for finishing don't forget to edit correctly the xorg.conf

I hope this solve all your problems..

mm... well, my nVidia drivers should just be ok, the 3D is up and running and I don't have explicit problems. I used the ones in etch and also the source for the kernel module for etch. Is this the problem? Should I have more recent drivers? I used this one because it's easy to manage and it's quite stable, unlikely the new versions.

yep, that's your problem, you need the beta drivers, they are in experimental for the time being, so it's not that hard to maintain.

Yeah, I would say the same, just trust the Nvidia developers and compile the lastest beta drivers with your great Linux kernel.

I've compiled the sources in sid, but nothing changed the versions are:

nvidia-glx 1.0.8876-2
nvidia-kernel-2.6.27-2-486 1.0.8876-2
nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1

are these ok? Do I need to download the installer from nVidia and use that one instead of using the debian way?
