no sound or internet after 2nd install

I thought my 2nd install was going good, no error msgs, way more modules loaded, much better mounting & my modem dialed out. I installed with the 2.6 kernel this tome after formatting ext3.

1st, like hundreds of others, I have no sound anywhere. 1st install I had it in kde. Have an audigy card, I installed alsa, did alsaconf, enabled sound in gnome control, ran alsamixer (noticed 10 emu10k1 sliders in it!), but no sound, as user or root. lsmod shows all kinds of snd modules loaded.

2nd, I dial out ok with pon, havent tried kppp. but am evidently not going anywhere. 1st thing was apt-get update, it siad temp failure resolving debian security. same thing when I tried it later. then I copied sources list from my 1st install. same thing. then I tried to connect to linuxquestions with mozilla, it said couldnt find it. the 1st line from plog is "cant determine ethernet address for proxy ARP" if that means anything. I didnt set up networking when I installed & the modem seems to connect ok-with something. Any suggestions?

I had the same issue

This is what I did for the same issue: as Root typr chmod 666 /dev/dsp then chmod 666 /dev/mixer. give that a shot an dsee if the sounds works after that.

I think that worked! I say think cause I got my internet conn going & did update & upgrade. than did chmod, ran cdplayer & nothing- then ran alsamixer & turned up analog mix slider & there it was! I think it was the chmod tho cause I turned up all the sliders yesterday & got nothing. thanks

There is a known problem with audigy sound cards. I have one, eventually got it to work (dnt know how), but audio resampling did not work, so I just use the built in sound on my motherboard
