no sound input device in system settings list

hi,

audacity stopped recording.
When I opened System Settings --> Sound-->Input the list "Choose device for sound input:" is blank. I cannot finish my audacity project.
Help, please.

Post the output of:
Code:
cat /proc/asound/cards
aplay -l
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
What were you doing with the system immediately before you lost sound?

I am not a system meddling guy. All I remember is I turned audacity on, mic didn't work (though the day before it did) I checked System Settings--> Sound --> Input, no device in the list.

I'm terribly sorry, I didn't read your OP properly and just assumed this was a standard sound output problem :/

I know nothing about sound input so I'll have to leave this one to somebody else.
