Mine has always just worked, so I don't really have an answer. Epiphany does pick up it's preferences from Gnome, though, so that's where you have to look. My Gnome settings are basically all "auto-detect."

Smile Solved.

for me,i resolved it.when ESD is enabled as with iceweasel,epiphany too needs to be invoked as "aoss epiphany-browser".I made a it all works.thanks to ubuntu forums community though i uses Debian Sid thanks ya all.
With ESD enabled(menu system>preferences>sound>devices>evrything to esd,in sounds tab>enable esd ticked,play system sounds enabled),I removed libesd0 and installed libesd-alsa0.posted a bug report about this sound problem to debian BTS also.

Browser Sound Works Now

I had the same problem as others reported after installing Debian. I have an Asus M4A785TD-V EVO motherboard built for AMD CPUs with built-in ATI Radeon HD 4200 sound. I added an ASUS ATI HD 6450 soundcard. I want the sound from the soundcard via HDMI cable to my TV / monitor.

At first when I would play from an application like VLC I would get distorted sound and echo. After installing Gnome Alsa Mixer brought it up and I muted the default sound from the motherboard and was able to get sound from apps like VLC, Audacity, etc., fine through the HDMI from my added sound card. But I could get no sound from videos on any browser. I could download the videos and play them with sound on VLC and Movie Player.

I had downloaded the proprietary catalyst driver from the Debian repository (contrib and/or non-free). After searching various forums and getting no satisfaction I added an asound.conf file as suggested on one forum with the following configuration:

pcm.pulse {
type pulse

ctl.pulse {
type pulse

pcm.!default {
type pulse

ctl.!default {
type pulse

Still, no sound from browsers (Chromium, Iceweasel). Other apps played flawlessly.

Finally, I went to the Gnome Control Center and selected "Sound" and under "Output" selected the Radeon 6400 series digital stereo HDMI device for sound output. No app was playing sound on the system. I went to "Applications" and none were displayed. I started playing a video in Chromium and suddenly it appeared under "Applications" with the sound playing. I stopped the video and started a video in Iceweasel and it played with sound. Don't know if this will work for you, but it did for me.

epiphany, flash-plugin, nosound
