I'm no expert, but I had similar problems on my system. Try cat audio cat audio0, and cat dsp to see if you get any results. If you get something like no such file or directory then you need to install ALSA or open sound, if you do get results, then it could just be your mixer is muted and the volumes are all the way down. What Windows manager are you using? If you are using KDE go to Menu>>Multimedia>>Kmix. If you don't have a multimedia menu, then you need to go back to your distro cds (or however you got the distro) and get them. If you can I would recommend getting the 2.6.8 kernel as opposed to the stock 2.4.x kernel, it makes audio so much easier.
