try going to Applications>Desktop Preferences>Sound in gnome and see if "enable sound server startup" is checked. if it isn't, select it, then select the option below it, system events sounds or something like that. now switch tabs to the events thing in back. pick an event, then test the sound with play (note: you need to have the gnome-audio package installed in order for this to work-- apt-get it if you don't have it). do you hear anything? you should-- if not, then you might have the wrong module loaded. try running apt-get sndconfig, then just type "sndconfig" at the terminal prompt.
if, on the other hand, the "enable sound server startup" box IS checked, and you're sure you have the right module loaded, try unselecting it, and then go play some application that requires sound. now do you hear anything? if so, then there is something screwed up with esd, gnome's sound server, and it is effectively monopolizing access to the sound card. that is the problem i'm having at the moment, and unfortunately i can't figure out how to fix it. thus, within moments of finishing typing this, i'm going to post my own request for help on that score. if that turns out to be your problem, keep an eye on my post.

hope this helps...
