see image indeed right to the save button (forget about the language, could not find another picture so fast.. It is exactly as on my Debian 8.1).
They use the same button as in Google Chrome.
Agree: the minimalistic way of using menus may be nice
for the eye.... but it is often
not very practical/difficult to find. For several programs you even need to activate menus before you can see them e.g. on top, else you need to activate them constantly by ALT key or something else. Screens nowadays are so large and resolutions so good, why not keep menus on top?
You see the Win8 was a failure, users disliked the tiles.... so that was an expensive "experiment" of MS...
In some Linux desktop I see the trend to go to tiles... that may be nice for tablets using a finger, but mouse orientated searches e.g. for settings menus is disaster. I've discharged several desktops in this way, I'm using Mate with kind of classical menu's.
