No desktop enviroment: Turn monitor off after idle for a certain amount of time
 

Howdy friends,

I have a computer that I just installed debian 5 on (well, it had had debian 4 on it for a while, and I upgraded, although I don't think thats important in regards to my question). I have the computer hooked up to an lcd screen that is shared by another computer which I use semi-frequently.

The debian machine is basically just a server of sorts, web server for the local network, as well as a test machine for person projects. I don't have any desktop environment installed, simply because I didn't need one.

Now, after a period of time, the console will go black, however, the monitor itself will never go to stand-by.. Is there a way to do this without installing X?

Look in the monitor manual if there's a setting that regulates how long the monitor has to stay on after loosing input from a video device. (i.e. the video chip in your server). I doubt the issue is in Debian, I think it's the monitor (but I may be wrong!)

Either set it via the monitor as stated or in your bios.

try enabling DPMS

xorg would be easier.. but you may find something above that's workable for console..
