Question No ARP result for Squeeze for single user

Just using a direct connection USB modem to connect to ISP Telstra [Australia].
But arp -a debian [using live CD] yeilds 0 results.

Is ARP only used for networks? Is this a peculiarity in Squeeze?

Just curious. ISP claims to provide internet security eg; antivirus, antispam.

If you are connected to a router directly, there is nobody else on your subnet. Therefore, arp will only return results of machines on your network and, since you are the only one on your network, nothing will be displayed. If you had the same IP address as your router does (external address instead of private 192, 172, or 10 network), then arp may return results.

Thanks for replying Kris,

I have been mucking about with various routers, modems and commands, including a Optus E583c which combines the modem and router in one, and am getting a bit confused!
