I'm using Gnome and Etch. I have a dvd rom drive and I wanted to copy a dvd to my hard drive. Right clicking on the dvd rom icon, I chose 'copy disk' and chose which directory I wanted the resulting file in. I clicked OK but got a box that said I didn't have 'readcd'. How do I get 'readcd' so I can try this out? I searched with synaptic for readcd under 'Description and name' but to no avail. Any help would be apreciated.
If you install apt-file, then you can search for any program within packages just by typing apt-file search string where in this case, string is readcd. It'll tell you the package that contains it as well as what directory it will be installed to.
Yeah I know its what I did but for this particular case I thought they had overwritten the /usr/bin/readcd file, but that's not possible under debian package system, unless with an /etc/alternative.
edit:
no I'm wrong
cdrecord is a dummy package that links to wodim which is a dependency of cdrecord
You're not wrong, the cdrecord package even says that you should use wodim instead. I still install cdrecord because if you compile from source something outside the Debian distro, it'll probably be looking for cdrecord. All the internal debian installed stuff was compiled to depend on wodim (like k3b, etc). Anyway, it says it just adds a simlink, so that's one less thing I have to worry about if I ever need it.

Maybe /usr/bin/readcd is just a symlink to /usr/bin/readom?
I made sure I had both wodim (which was already installed) and cdrecord (which is just a link to wodim). I tried to copy a DVD iso again and got the same error. Here's the exact text, but it may not be helpfull.
Quote:
File image creation failed
Could not run sub process: Failed to execute child process "readcd" (No such file or directory).
I went to a partition I have sarge on, and it's there - '/usr/bin/readcd' - Is there a package for this any more?
EDIT: should I make my own link to readom from readcd?
