I'm trying to upgrade my debian for the first time. I have read the apt-get online tutorial on the debian site, but still not sure I got it all right...

My original installation was Woody 3.0r0 with Kernel 2.2.20;

As a friend recommended, I am trying to upgrade to the testing flavour.

In my sources.list, I have changed all the instances of stable to testing;

# apt-get update

And in these very moments I'm running:

#apt-get dist-upgrade

My questions are:

1) What Kernel-image is going to be installed?
2) Suppose I want to use kernel-image-2.4.22-1-686, what should I do?
3) is vmlinuz going to change as well? (I need it for my boot loader).

4) netselect-apt has remove all instances of security.debian.org from sources.list, is this normal? Should I add them manually?

I don't think your kernel will change with what you did.


apt-cache search kernel-image will tell you what kind of image you can install. It might not work without modifs upon install though. However, it keeps your other kernel in the lilo menu automatically

you can install with apt-get installl kernel-image-2.x.x.x

for security, this is curious, but I don't know. I don't know netselect-apt

I agree with pretty much everything ugob said, I also don't know much about netselect-apt but I do know that testing and unstable do not get timely security updates like stable does. This could be the reason.

What I usually do with my prod servers is run stable with backports for mysql and a few others. www.backports.org
