Newbie: my gnome resolution is sub-par

Hi All,

Just switched from ubuntu to debian. In ubuntu, my radeon graphics card is picked up with no problem- screen res.= 1024x768. In debian I'm stuck at 800x600 and this is my only option. I looked via lsmod and see that radeon driver is loaded but not sure where to go from here. Tips/hints?

Thanks,

ab

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Make a copy first so you can get back to running if you have a problem.
It contains your possible resolutions, go into line mode (terminal screen), issue the "su" command,
do a "cd /etc/X11" then use an editor. I use "nano XF86Config-4" but you may prefer kate.
Look at the sections the look like
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
Depth is the color size (in bits) and modes are the resolution ... add some modes (for all depths you care about).
Also check the monitor section ... it probably is ok, but do not tell it to do someting your monitor can not (HorizSync and VertRefresh).

Hope that helps,
Steven Peckham.

Thanks for the reply. It was suggested that I may want to just install debian "etch" unstable which may take care of the problem. I'm digging into debian though because I want to really learn a linux system. I like ubuntu but it solves too many problems for you. Thanks for pointing me towards the XF86config file, this is exactly how I want to proceed.

Thanks,

cj
