Newbie Install

Ok,

I know I've submitted threads in here before about AMD64, but they don't have a low power version out yet for laptops, so I'm going with the Athlon XP-M. What will I need to do to install it. I'd like to use the d-i, preferably the easiest way.

There is a post about the sarge debian-installer being broken. I don't know if they are referring to beta4, the current builds, or both.

http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/.../msg00053.html

The person recommended using the sid debian-installer. I don't know if this is still the case. It may be that the problems are solved now. If you want the sid debian-installer, you can get it here.

There are lots of known bugs ( http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/errata ) in the Sarge beta 4 installer. For some people/hardware it may fail to work but, generally speaking, it's not "broken" and it should work just fine in most occasions. I've personally used the Sarge beta 4 installer to install Debian successfully on my computer.

is the d-i graphical? does it have a repartition tool? is there anythin else I should do or read before trying an install? Does the sarge CD set have the new d-i or is it using the old woody install? is a netinst palusible over a modem?
