New to Linux, and need help to start Debian. Have a P4 in Asus P5P800 w/ MSI RX9250
Hello.
My Name is Rick and I am completely new to Linux and I want to learn as much as I can. I have a Pentium 4 on and Asus P5P800, with a MSI ATI Radeon RX9250 128MB DDR Video card. I also have an Optiquest Q71 17" Monitor. I can get a basic level of Debian running at 640x480/60MHz(I used it to gain access to here). This is very low quality and I feel that I can get more out of this system, and if not I would like to learn enough to help get a better system in place, via distr, or kernel manipulation. I want to know everything I can eventually. So first question is this:
1.What are the best settings that I should have when installing Debian fresh from boot disk?
I am not afraid to say that I know very little right now.
2.What can I learn from the "info" program in Terminal?

I assume that you have installed Sarge. I'm sure you learned a lot in the process. Let me suggest that you double your learning and the success of your install. Get the Etch Beta3 Netinstaller, about 100MB .iso, and do a fresh install using that. Much better hardware recognition and Xorg with nicer drivers.
2nd installs go much more easily than 1st ones, and you'll have a modern distro rather than fighting to get a very dated one working correctly.

Sarge probably isn't the best thing to use on more modern hardware. In my experience, Etch has very good hardware detection, including graphics. You could try doing a dist-upgrade to Etch, which is what I did and everything went fine. There are some people who have had problems doing that, however. Maybe I just got lucky.

I down loaded the Iso that you gave me, but when I went to burn the disc I recieved this message:
File image creation failed
You do not have permissions to create that file (/media/cdrom0/image.iso).
As well when I put an audio cd in the drve to see if it could be read, I got this message:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog -
I appologize if I seen a bit daft. I am trying to see if the learn about it through the info program in the terminal(command line).

For the cd issue you may not have the right permissions, what does and
Code:
ls -l /media/cdrom0
return?
For audio cds you don't mount them, mounting is for mounting filesystems, audio cds do not have file systems

What command are you using to burn the iso to cd?
You may want to try it as root.

probably a permissions problem...try as root to burn the cd...also make sure you burn it as an iso image burn and not a data burn....
