New kernel installation

I am running Debian Woody. Not long after I first installed I ran into problems and reinstalled with the default kernel 2.2.20-idepci. Since then I've tweaked and downloaded and do not want to reinstall unless absolutely necessary.

If I install a different kernel with apt-get such as kernel-image-2.4.18-bf2.4 will that give me things the current one is lacking such as access to iptables, cd burning, etc.?

When you install a new kernel via apt-get does it modify the modules.conf to the added functionality or does it base the configuration of the new kernel off the existing modules?

Sorry, but as far as kernels go I'm a newbie.

new kernel = new modules

I upgraded the 2.4.18 kernel in woody to 2.4.26. With the new kernel I got the new modules in 2.4.26. The new orinoco_cs module in the 2.4.26 kernel fixed my MA401 wireless card problem. I got the kernel from backports.org.

hope this helps
