New install of debian wheezy, can not see computer on lan
 

Hello all,

I recently completed a new install of Debian wheezy, the install process went smoothly with no problems noted. This computer is on my home lan with several other computers on the network, I can browse the web on the Debian computer, the routers dhcp has assigned this computer an ip address and I can ping that address from the other computers on the lan. My problem is that the Debian wheezy computer is not visible to any of the other computers on the lan.

Any guidance on resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated

What are you trying to accomplish?

By visible I mean that I can't see the computer listed in the network " such as when I go to my office computer running linux mint and browse the network it shows icons of the computers on the lan and the shared folders on those computers" The debian wheezy computer is running a program called "AGO" which I will be using for a home security system it has a web admin page that is used for setting up the system. The page can be reached by the lan address of the computer such as 192.168.1.102:8080, unfortunately the web browsers on the other computers can't find or connect to this server.

Typically, when you browse the network assuming you are using Nautilus or similar then you are looking for windows shares. Is samba installed, configured and running on the wheezy computer? Is the firewall if running allowing SMB traffic?

I'm not familiar with AGO but it might need to be configured to listen on the network instead of just the server itself. Again the firewall needs to allow traffic if running on port 8080.

You'll only see this if you've installed and configured a samba server. I'm quite sure that a default Debian installation will not have done this since it should be considered a security risk

First check if it can be seen from the localhost. Eg on the wheezy machine point your browser at:
If this does not work, then you need to check AGO, itself - how did you install it? What does the documentation say? etc.

If it does work then the problem is likely firewall or perhaps tcp wrappers etc.

Thank you for your replies, how stupid of me to not realize that I needed to install Samba, and yes that solved that problem. as far as reaching the ago server I found that I had used the wrong port it was supposed to be 8008 and not 8080, so two stupid mistakes at one time.
