new install mouse issues

I just finished installing Debian. Everything appears to work fine except for my mouse in X. I loaded up KDE with "startx" and the loading screen came up, then the basic initial desktop (though it is off center and not as big as the monitor, I can fix these by stretching on my monitor). The mouse doesn't work properly. The cursor moves, but will randomly jump back to the bottom left corner and seems to be sending click messages continuously. It is a basic ps/2 wheel mouse. Any ideas? How can I get to the debian x setup wizard that I used durint setup?

Thanks from a new Debian user
Greg

You can get back to the configuration by using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 you will want to choose the /dev/psaux as the device and ImPS/2 as the protocol. If you want to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file itself then the section should look similar to this:

Code:
Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "Mouse0"
        Driver "mouse"
        Option "CorePointer"
        Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
        Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
        Option "Emulate3Buttons" "True"
        Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

If the mouse acts weird then all you need to change is the protocol from ImPS/2 to PS/2 or whatever is appropriate. Changing the device doen't appear to be necessary as your mouse signals are received but not properly interpreted.

If you are using some optical mouse, like I do those changes may not help. Then what you have to do is upgrade from Xfree86 4.2.* to 4.3.*. For a long time I had the problems with my mouse on both RedHat 8.0 and then when I installed debian sarge. I noted that on installing Mandrake 9.1 and booting Knoppix I didn't have the same problems so I realized taht what these two distro's were using the later version of xfree.

To upgrade xfree on debian add the following line to the file /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://debian.netfarm.it/experimental/ woody sherpya

run the command 'apt-get update' and then 'apt-get install x-window-system'

I believe that should work.
Good luck
