New Debian install X11 help...

My friend suggested I should try Debian because apt-get is awesome. So I install it works fine. I have a NVIDIA TNT2 card and there were no drivers so I said VGA, res 1024x768 and 16 depth. Now when I startx it says vga driver can't work in 16 depth. So I go startx -- -depth 12 and I get this error

Fatal server error:
Addscreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0

I suspect it's something to do with the VGA driver which I can fix with the NVIDIA driver but I don't have a text editor even. Well maybe I do but I tried joe pico and vim nothing came up.

Well, first off apt-get install vim (Though I'd be surprised if you don't have either vi or ed installed by default).

"I have a NVIDIA TNT2 card and there were no drivers "

#dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

this time, choose 'nv' from the video card list, as in:
nvIDIA.

arg it won't even let me reconfigure:
/usr/sbin/dpckg-reconfigure: xserver-xfree86 is not fully installed

I guess I have to uninstall it and try again.

Don't forget to install x-window-system and a window manager.
